What is DTF Printing?
At SD Print House, we primarily use DTF printing for our custom apparel products. Direct to Film (DTF) is a textile printing method where designs are printed onto a special film and then transferred onto fabric using heat and pressure.
How it works:
-
Print the Design: A specialized DTF printer prints the image in full color onto a clear PET film using textile inks (including a white base layer).
-
Apply Adhesive Powder: While the ink is still wet, a powdered adhesive is applied to the print and then cured with heat.
-
Transfer to Fabric: The prepared film is placed onto the fabric and pressed with a heat press. The heat melts the adhesive, bonding the ink to the garment.
-
Peel the Film: After pressing, the film is peeled away, leaving the design on the fabric.
What it's known for:
-
Working on a variety of fabrics (cotton, polyester, blends).
-
Producing vibrant, durable prints.
-
Being more flexible than traditional methods like screen printing or DTG (Direct to Garment).

What is Sublimation Printing?
At SD Print House, we use sublimation printing as an alternative to DTF printing. Sublimation printing is a process that uses heat to transfer dye onto materials—most commonly polyester fabrics or polyester-coated surfaces—by turning solid ink into gas without passing through a liquid phase.
How Sublimation Printing Works:
-
Design Creation: The image is designed digitally, typically using software like Photoshop or Illustrator.
-
Printing: The design is printed in reverse onto special sublimation transfer paper using sublimation inks.
-
Transfer: The printed paper is placed on the target surface (like a T-shirt or mug).
-
Heat Press: Using a heat press (typically around 400°F / 204°C), the ink on the paper sublimates—turns directly from solid to gas.
-
Bonding: The gas permeates the polyester fibers or coating and solidifies inside them as it cools, becoming a permanent part of the material.
Key Features:
-
Durability: The design won’t peel, crack, or fade—it's embedded in the material.
-
Feel: There's no texture or raised surface—the print feels like part of the fabric.
-
Material Limitation: Only works on light-colored polyester or polymer-coated items (like mugs, metal panels, etc.).
